Merchants must protect themselves against chargebacks. With a dispute window of 10 business days, merchants are often held liable for the loss of both sale and product. Luckily, with 3D Secure you can mitigate this risk.
By enrolling in and enabling 3D Secure, merchants can protect themselves against payments disputed as fraudulent. With 3D Secure, the liability of any authenticated transactions that are disputed as fraudulent will shift to the card issuer (e.g. VISA, MasterCard).
Why should I use 3D Secure?
- 3D Secure authenticated transactions shift liability for payments disputed as fraudulent (i.e. the cardholder claims they did not make the purchase and was victim to fraud).
- Cardholder disputes that fall under different categories, such as merchant error, are exempt from liability shift. An example of a merchant error chargeback would be a dispute on the basis that there was fault in the product’s fulfilment.
Good to know:
- You can check whether a transaction has been authenticated by 3D Secure by viewing its associated “Transaction Details” page.
- In the event of a chargeback, you will receive a chargeback notification email that will advise where to send your dispute documentation.
